Is there a different between your comfort zone and playing it safe when it come to personal style?
After TWO whole posts in which I sport a little more color, I'm back to the main staples of my sartorial tastes: black and white. I can't tell if this is laziness or if this color scheme is really my signature. Lagerfeld is known for his tuxedo, but Anna Wintour has said many times that wearing all black is boring and that she wouldn't be caught dead in an outfit lacking color, so it seems like the Fashion universe is generally divided on whether or not achromatic is a good thing or a bad thing.
Personally, my proclivity for black and white stems from one of style icons Janelle Monae. She's been quoted as stating her fashion choices are a deliberate message on uniformity. In 2012 when accepting her award at the Black Girls Rock! ceremony, she said, "When I started my musical career I was a maid, I used to clean houses. My parents--my mother was a proud janitor, my step-father who raised me like his very own worked at the post office and my father was a trash man. They all wore uniforms. And that's why I stand here today in my black and white and I wear my uniform to honor them. This is a reminder that I have work to do, I have people to uplift, I have people to inspire," she said after explaining that she grew up in Wyandotte County, "the poorest county" in Kansas City. And today I wear my uniform proudly as a Covergirl.
Now, I can not say that my choice to wear something so uniform is in any way direct act of protest or an egalitarian nod to working-class, but I do think my uniformity is a deliberate choice as a means to shape my own identity. I speak of super heroes, a lot-- it will come up again and again and again, especially so long as my hair is grey and I can call myself Storm. I bring them up again, because I have a fascination with how their particular color palettes are signifiers of what they represent and who they are are. I especially like when they wear those colors while not in their costume--Superman wearing little accents of red or blue, Green Hornet always wearing green turtlenecks, Wonder Woman always in some sort of red. I guess my colors are blank, because my personal style is fluid and constantly evolving. My art is never stagnant, just an empty canvas.
